STAFF have been left “completely shocked” this week after a decades-old children’s activities centre closed with immediate effect – leaving 10 people out of work.

The Ty’n y Berth Centre at the foot of Cader Idris in Corris Uchaf, which has offered ‘adventure learning’ to thousands of children and young adults visiting the area over the last 40-plus years, closed its doors on Tuesday.

The centre, which was one of nine Wide Horizons settings to close this week after a dispute between the charity and Greenwich Council, employed approximately 10 members of staff who have all lost their jobs.

The future of the converted village school is now unclear but representatives of Wide Horizons suggest there is “very little to no hope” that the centre will reopen in the future.

According to Wide Horizons, an independent organisation borne of a joint initiative between two London boroughs, Royal Greenwich Council had forced the closure of children’s charity by making a “last-minute U-turn not to lend the charity £200,000 as initially pledged”.

Cllr Danny Thorpe, leader of Royal Greenwich, has refuted the claims and said that any suggestion of reneging on a deal is “just plain wrong” and that they were “bitterly disappointed” with the centres’ closure.
