Aberystwyth bandstand received a well-publicised makeover and has gone on to host a number of events and concerts since it reopened.

Reflecting on their time in the bandstand this summer are the members of Aberystwyth Silver Band.

“The 2019 Summer Bandstand Season has been the busiest season ever for the band, with performances every Tuesday evening and every Thursday evening throughout July and August,” said Heather Phillips, band treasurer and publicity officer.

“The members of the band have turned up faithfully and played to packed audiences each time.

“Most of the seats were taken with many more people choosing to stop and listen at the bandstand’s entrance for a while before continuing their evening stroll along the promenade.

“Under its new musical director, Dr Brendan Coyle, and deputy conductor, Dr Graham Brand, the band has chosen an exciting summer programme of music with some old favourites and some new additions.

“The band concluded its run with one of the audience’s favourite sing-a-long Delilah and Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.”

Many soloists were featured throughout the season including Anna Cole on soprano cornet playing Summertime, Jacob Williams on cornet playing Hine e Hine, Amy Wilson on flugel horn playing Concierto de Aranjuez, Graham Showell on tenor horn playing He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother and Georgia on my Mind, Graham Brand on tenor horn playing Theme from Local Hero: Going Home and Neil Taylor on euphonium playing Carrickfergus.

“As a band, we were very pleased to welcome all visitors who included family of band members, past members and holidaymakers,” said Heather.

“We were joined by Viv, Geoff, Mark, Libby, Bethan, Helen, Elen, Lucy, Edward, Aidan, Harvey, Emyr and Richard for various performances over the summer.”

Heather added: “The band’s youth contingent has grown over the last 12 months and we had no fewer than 19 young players joining us for the summer season.

“It has been wonderful to see how these youngsters have progressed and we are grateful for their support and for the support of their parents."
