An honest, heart-warming book by singer Non Parry has been launched.
More than an autobiography, Paid â Bod Ofn speaks openly about Non’s life, her mental health and her husband’s illness: actor Iwan John was on dialysis for a long time before finally undergoing a kidney transplant.
Non, who lives near Cardigan, said: “I’ve always wanted to write a book. I’m a big fan of books by people who share their experiences and find them very inspirational – and they can be such a comfort. I knew that I’d had a lot of experiences that might help others.”
Welsh-language pop group Eden came on the scene when Non was 22. Overnight she became a familiar face, realising a childhood dream with her best friends Emma and Rachael.
But quietly, behind her smile and the chorus from their most popular song, Paid â Bod Ofn (Don’t be afraid), there was a very different story.
In 2019 Non decided enough was enough and it was time to admit she was scared of many things.
After years of dealing with mental health problems, Non admitted the truth.
“The next minute what had been going on in my head was a headline on the S4C news!” said Non.
“I mean, if you’re going to be open with people about the stuff you’ve been hiding about your mental health, where better to start than the news?!”
Paid â Bod Ofn is the story of growing up, of being an uncertain child who suffered with OCD and anxiety, to being a young adult performing in front of thousands.
It discusses how Eden was formed, and the influence of her friend and cousin Caryl Parry Jones on her career.
Non talks honestly about the panic attacks, the depression and the anxiety that she has suffered from throughout her life.
She also talks about her husband Iwan John’s illness, of waiting for his kidney transplant, of the experience of becoming a stepmother to young children at 24 and about the birth of her children and the experience of being a mother – as well as the miscarriage that she suffered and the grief after losing her mum.
“As I wrote Paid â Bod Ofn I came to realise that I’m a lot stronger than I thought,” said Non.
“And I hope that the book will make readers realise how strong they are. We’re heroes and the main characters in our own stories. I also hope that my book will make people laugh a little as well!”
