A CARDIGAN sixth-former who has invented a 3D-printed weatherproof cycling aid has reached the final of a national science and engineering competition.

Oliver Phillips, of Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi, was among entrants tasked to consider science and engineering in a new light and invent something that would enhance people’s everyday lives.

Winners will be announced at The Big Bang Fair, at NEC Birmingham in March.

Describing his invention, Oliver said: “Most cycling computers are very expensive, costing between £60 to £100 and in most cases are unnecessarily bought as cyclists already own a mobile phone that can perform all the features of a cycling computer and more.

“The solution I devised is a weatherproof mobile phone case mounted on the bike itself. It is fully adjustable to house a variety of different phones.

“This saves a lot of money and allows the mobile phone to be used for a variety of different applications, such as the Strava app, Maps, GPS, Speedometer, Fitness apps and the camera.
