Madam,

The reaction to the shooting of the lynx recently authorised by Ceredigion County Council, sad as it is, seems to be a bit OTT. This is probably due to social media interaction by people with nothing better to do.

I am a bit confused when one group in the country wants to release lynx back into the wild and, in another part of the country, a lynx is shot.

Fifty university students held a vigil on Aberystwyth promenade for the lynx. What for? Did any of the students hold a silent vigil on 11 November in memory of men and women who gave their today for our tomorrow in two World Wars? I doubt it.

Sorrowful as this episode is, some people (especially those who are joined in holy matrimony to social media), should get their priorities in some sense of order. Nothing is gained by abuse. An investigation will probably take place. Whether Ceredigion Council is the right public body to do it remains to be seen.

The Lynx UK Trust may have to think again before proceeding to release lynx back into the countryside - especially if the Ceredigion fugitive lynx is supposed to have killed seven sheep.

Of course, if they are released back into the countryside and end up getting out of hand we can then release another one-time British wild animal - the wolf.

Yours etc,

Chris Samuel, William Street, Aberystwyth.
