Editor,

We share the sentiments expressed by county councillor Mark Strong in your front-page article “Rise in homeless sparks death fears” (Cambrian News, Aberystwyth edition, Thursday, 5 December).

As the frenzy of seasonal spending increases in speed for the excess of food, presents, wine and celebrations that far too many of us indulge in, can we ask fellow residents in Ceredigion to think about those less fortunate, particularly those vulnerable people sleeping on the streets.

After a move to Aberystwyth last year and getting to know about Cymdeithas Gofal (Ceredigion Care Society), we decided to support them and we have done that in two ways.

Firstly, like many people we have more stuff than we need so in our case we have donated some furniture, a fridge freezer, linen and towels, which have been gratefully received.

Secondly, we are in the fortunate position, like others, of being able to afford and budget for our fuel bills, so for us the £200 winter fuel allowance is something we have chosen to gift to Cymdeithas Gofal.

But for the exorbitant cost of means-testing the winter fuel allowance, it could be much higher and better targeted for those who really need it.

We wish Cymdeithas Gofal well in its valuable work.
