Llyn musician Al Lewis is about to embark on his latest tour, performing tracks from his new concept album, Te yn y Grug (Tea in the Heather).

Originally from Pwllheli, the 35-year-old award-winning singer-songwriter will bring songs from the album to the stage, including his home town, at Neuadd Dwyfor with Côr Eifionydd on 27 March.

He will also perform with local Aberystwyth choir Côr ABC at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on 21 February and Galeri, Caernarfon with Côr Dre on 27 February, which has already sold out.

Split into two halves, the first half of the show will see Al delve into his back-catalogue to perform solo acoustic interpretations of songs taken from his multitude of albums and projects to date.

In the second half Al will be joined on stage by other musicians and a local choir to perform Te yn y Grug in its entirety.

The songs which make up Te yn y Grug were first performed as part of the hugely successful show of the same name at the 2019 National Eisteddfod in Llanrwst.

Tickets for that performance sold out within hours, making it the fastest selling show in the Eisteddfod’s history.

The lyrics, written by Karen Owen and Cefin Roberts, were inspired by the series of short stories of the same name written by the iconic Welsh author Dr Kate Roberts – which celebrated its 60th anniversary since its first publication in 1959.

The story centres around the lives of three young girls, Begw, Winni and Mair, growing up around the turn of the 20th century in the slate-mining communities of north-west Wales.

It is a universal tale of growing up, loss, poverty, religion, community and belonging.

“The album was recorded over an intense but joyous five-day period at Sain Studios in North Wales in August 2019 with an array of talented musicians, some of whom will be joining me for these shows,” Al said.

It’s an exciting time for the musician who was born in Pwllheli.

Al was delighted last month when his music was aired on BBC Radio 2.

“Huge thanks once again to Jo Whiley for giving my new single Symud Mlaen a spin on her wicked BBC Radio 2 show,” he said.

“So cool to have my Welsh-language track in amongst The Sugarhill Gang and Christine and the Queens!”

As well as preparing for the tour, Al has also made a video for Symud Mlaen.

“Thanks to Ben Williams for directing/editing it,” Al said.

The video was shot at Urchin Studios in London.

“I had some great times there recording as part of Lewis & Leigh,” Al said.

Al and Alva Leigh from Mississippi released their debut album, Ghost, in 2016.

The collaboration proved successful and the pair performed at Glastonbury.

The tour starts at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on 21 February, then Galeri Caernarfon on 27 February and finally, to his home town of Pwllheli at Neuadd Dwyfor on 27 March.
