YOUTH art project MicroMACRO Aberteifi has been busy on the iconic beach at Mwnt in Ceredigion creating weird and wonderful sand designs to celebrate the patterns and forms of wild flowers.
The first part of the project in May saw the group create the pollen head of a dandelion and recent activity saw the dandelion completed in its full glory.
As part of Grow Wild, the national outreach programme of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the project MicroMACRO Aberteifi, with support from Cardigan’s 4CG, enlisted the help of artist Marc Treanor and Rachel Shiamh to create these inspiring sand circles.
Project leader Gwenda Mark said: “The aim of the project is to encourage people to look closely at wild flowers and observe the complexity and beauty of natural forms. We’re concentrating on the dandelion, Dant y Llew in Welsh, one of the most reviled yet essential plants for nutrient accumulation and human medicines.
“Our Aberteifi land art group, has expanded the microscopic images onto the macroscopic scale in sand... some blown up a million fold! Anyone wanting to find out more about our wild flower projects can visit our Facebook page, ‘Blooming Wild Cardigan/Gwyllt yn Aberteifi.”
Artist Marc Treanor said: “We use the beach as our canvas and inspiration comes from the wild flowers around us.
“A dandelion is normally seen as a weed but it is a wild flower and should rightly be celebrated.
“What we have created is a geometric design to reflect this and the beauty of the dandelion for all to see.”
