A 40mph speed limit along the A487 between Aberystwyth and Bow Street is only a temporary measure, officials have said.
The speed limit that runs from the top of Penglais Hill down to near the railway bridge on the outskirts of Bow Street has been in place for the best part of the week, but officials say this is so construction work can be carried out along the road.
In March it was announced that the speed limit along the road would be reduced from 60mph to 50mph following the deaths of 18-year-old Ellie Bryan and Llanbadarn councillor Paul James on the stretch of road last year.
At the time, Ceredigion AM Elin Jones said this was not low enough and called for it to be further cut to 40mph.
While the current 40mph speed limit is only temporary, the Welsh Government have said they are treating the implementation of the 50mph speed limit as a “priority”.
A spokesperson for the Welsh Government said: “Transport for Wales are carrying out their new station and associated road junction improvement works in Bow Street itself where there is temporary traffic management and speed limit in place for safety purposes.
“Earlier this year our comprehensive Speed Limit Review recommended a lowering of the limit to 50mph over part of the Bow Street to Aberystwyth section – from Waunfawr to Dorglwyd junction.
“We are progressing that as a priority.”
