A famous, speedo-clad trekker is beginning his journey to Aberystwyth today, on his five-month mission to walk the entirety of the UK coastline for charity.

Mick Cullen, otherwise known as Speedo Mick, is making his way from Ireland to Holyhead today to start leg 10 of his journey.

Leg 10 will see Mick, 55, stop off in Maltraeth, Bethesda, Pen y Gwryd Hotel, Maentwrog, Dolgellau, Machynlleth before finishing in Aberystwyth on 25 August.

Everton fan Mick embarked on the 2,000-mile trek, across the UK and Ireland, from Stornoway, taking in Scotland before heading over to Ireland.

After touring Ireland, Mick will now travel across Wales to Cardiff, before crossing the Severn to visit most major towns and cities in England, before finishing in his home town of Liverpool.

The trek will take Mick five months to complete.

Mick has, so far, raised £43,423 of his £100,000 fundraising goal for his charity, the SpeedoMick Foundation.

The mission at SpeedoMick Foundation is to provide “support for young people through education, relieving poverty, or the support of mental and physical health”.

They hope to support the most vulnerable by showing compassion and understanding in an inclusive way, supporting charities and groups that believe in their ethos.

On his fundraising page, Mick said: “The reason I’m doing the tour is to give back to the people and the communities who have supported me in the past.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has placed a huge strain on the finances of so many worthy charities and shone a light on how difficult life can be for a lot of young people in this country, whether because of a lack of food, money or opportunities. So I’ll do anything I can to help.

“Homelessness, mental health and disadvantaged young people are issues very close to my own heart as I’ve been through those struggles and I know how hard it is to come out the other side.

“In my life, I’ve been in some dark, lonely, hopeless places and for me, one the most rewarding parts of my fundraising has been to help people who are facing what I have faced.”
