A statue commemorating a famous Welsh poem is set to be unveiled in Criccieth this weekend.
The Welsh Incident, a creative piece of poetry written by Robert Graves about an unusual event in the town in 1929, is the theme of the sculpture which will be first presented to the public on Saturday, 2 November.
The unveiling will bring to an end ‘Unique Streets of Criccieth 2019’, a series of events which have taken place over the last few months in the town.
The sculptor behind the statue, Howard Bowcott, came up with the idea after listening to suggestions from others in his field.
He said: “It’s a small project. For me that was the appeal. I thought this will be a nice thing to do. The sculpture will be in an open space. It’s not big or dramatic, but I think it will have an intriguing presence.”
Mr Bowcott, who is based in north Wales said that the community aspect of the project was important to him. He said: “I work on big regenerations across the UK, particularly in South Wales. It’s been great to work with a good group of local people to help create something in their community.”
Cynan Jones is the project manager of Unique Streets of Criccieth.
He has spoken about how the sculpture idea was decided. He said: “We worked with the town council and business groups. We wanted to come up with a theme. The group came up with the poem idea, it fit the bill perfectly.”
