BOW Street could be one of 12 locations across Wales to benefit from a new train station, it has been announced.

Ken Skates AM, Cabinet secretary for economy and infrastructure, said Bow Street had been shortlisted out of 46 proposed locations for new train stations.

The 12 proposals will now be subject to more comprehensive scrutiny before a final decision on each of the proposals is made.

Mr Skates wrote to AMs: “The more costly work on producing detailed cost estimates for a new station and timetable modelling is only carried out on the highest priorities.

“The stage two assessment will look in more detail at the strength of the financial and economic case for a new railway station, including advice from Network Rail on deliverability.”

Ceredigion MP Mark Williams, and Bow Street county councillor Paul Hinge, have this week welcomed the announcement.

Mr Williams said: “This announcement is a positive step after years of hard work by local and national campaigners, and I very much hope that we will see the reopening of Bow Street station in the very near future.

“Not only is this hugely significant for people living in and near Bow Street, but it is hugely significant in helping to reduce congestion at Aberystwyth station and sends a very important message about the use of our railways and public transport more generally.

“Many people have long felt that the public transport needs of areas like ours have been ignored. This decision goes some way to correcting this.”
