A Dyffryn Ardudwy student has been crowned Miss Gwynedd.

Olivia Hewlett, 20, scooped the prestigious award at the Miss Wales finals last month.

Olivia, who is currently studying a degree in Primary Education through the medium of Welsh at Prifysgol Bangor, said: “I was scouted for the Miss Wales competition when I was on a night out in university last year by a previous Miss Wales contestant.

“To begin with I was quite hesitant of the idea as I didn’t have much self confidence or think I had what I took to be a Miss Wales finalist.

“After a week or so, I was so intrigued with the idea and thought I’d regret it if I didn’t take this opportunity.

“I was completely lost for words when I had the confirmation email that I’d be representing Gwynedd and Anglesey in the Miss Wales final in Cardiff.”

The Miss Wales competition concentrates on the empowerment of women, increasing self confidence and raising money for Beauty with a Purpose, a charity that helps disadvantaged children worldwide.

During Olivia’s Miss Wales journey, she wanted to reinforce the importance of the Welsh language, empowering others and increase her own self confidence as well as others.

She added: “During my Miss Wales journey I worked with Age Cymru in the Caernarfon branch where I spent the day making and serving afternoon tea, as well as socialising with the staff at Age Cymru and the elderly through the medium of Welsh."
