AN OLD speedboat has been turned into part of the incredible edible corridor in Porthmadog thanks to the help of local young people.

The old boat was repainted and then planted by Year 9 pupils at Ysgol Eifionydd as a preview for the Duke of Edinburgh programme they will start later this year

Lizzie Wynn is project manager of Incredible Edible. She told the Cambrian News about how the boat was transformed.

She said: “We started with the D of E students around three years ago. They have helped us with various projects over the years.

“We purchased a green speedboat and we painted it teal. The D of E pupils spent two sessions over two weeks filling the boat with soil, decorating and planting edible plants in the boat.

“It is part of the Bwyd Bendigedig Port, Incredible Edible Corridor Lles in Porthmadog. There are fruit bushes and trees planted in it.

“The young people who helped with the boat worked so hard. They are just starting their D of E journey and this was a taste of what they have to come. This was lovely to put together and it was great to be part of a positive community project.”

Nia Rees, a Gwynedd youth worker, leads the sessions on the Duke of Edinburgh award at Ysgol Eifionydd.

She said: “The young people dug all the soil up from around the leisure centre to fill the boat. After the boat was full they all had the opportunity to plant their own edible plant, also put their hand print and name on the boat.

“This is a great way to involve all members of the community. It allows the young people to give back, and take ownership and pride in an awesome project, for all to see in their community.

“This goes towards their skill and volunteering section of the award. The young people have the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge from these amazing ladies at incredible edible.”
