ABERYSTWYTH University Students’ Union hosted the Welsh language music scene’s annual Gwobrau’r Selar awards on Saturday, with Dolgellau-based indie-pop band, Swnami, the main winners.

Swnami came out on top of the public vote in four of the 12 categories, taking home the awards for Best Song, Best Album, Best Artwork and the prestigious Best Band.

The awards cap a great year for the group who have made a name for themselves internationally whilst travelling to the Netherlands and also releasing their debut album.

After picking up three awards last year, it was another good night for Ywain Gwynedd, who won the awards for Best Music Video for his hit song Sebona Fi, and the award for Best Solo Artist for the second year.

It was also a successful evening for the National Eisteddfod’s fringe youth festival, Maes B, which left with the awards for Best Live Event and Best Promoter.

For the first time ever, there was a dead heat in one of the categories, with Radio 1 and Radio Cymru’s Huw Stephens and Lisa Gwilym of Radio Cymru/Stiwdio Gefn sharing the award for Best Presenter.

The other winners on the night were Band Pres Llareggub who won the Best Breakthrough Act award; Gwilym Bowen Rhys was named Best Instumentalist; and Anglesey rockers, Calfari, won the Best Single or EP award for their debut EP Nôl ac Ymlaen.

A new award was presented for the best single of Y Selar’s Singles Club with Ysgol Sul and their tune Aberystwyth yn y Glaw snapping up the title.
