I’m sure we’ve all had enough of Covid, but we have a long way to go yet!

I’m not medically trained but as I understand it, this nasty little virus has developed the ability to enter the human body and hijack our cells to reproduce at an alarming rate and infect others before we show any symptoms, if at all in some cases! This enables it to travel to others, undetected, and this is why it has been able to spread across the world unchecked.

We appear to know now that it is transmitted from one human being to another via oral or nasal secretions, (i.e coughs, sneezes, and speaking) and in most cases by people who appear perfectly healthy. If it is so limited, why is it so successful? Because, in my opinion, there is a percentage of the population that just can’t grasp it!

I see store staff who appear young, fit and healthy not wearing any form of face covering whilst mingling with customers, I saw a customer walk into a shop in Aberystwyth without any face covering and when challenged by the staff stated that he didn’t have one and in any case he didn’t need one; and the paper is full of reports of cases where people have contravened the lockdown rules.

Many are happy to party and socialise without any thought of trying to limit social contact. How selfish can you get! These are the type of individuals who drive through 30mph speed limits at 50mph, overtake on solid white lines and other, what some might see as trivial, breaches of the law. Okay, as with Covid, perhaps on a majority of occasions nobody gets hurt but their actions do sometimes result in somebody being seriously injured or even killed. Laws are made to protect us all. These individuals are happy to enjoy all the benefits of living in a safe and secure society but are not prepared to abide by the rules that try to ensure we are all able to live in that safe and secure society.

Examples around the world have shown how just one apparently healthy but infected person can infect hundreds of others.

It seems to me that so many people who try so hard, have had their efforts thwarted by a few mindless, uncaring and arrogant individuals.

As a species our Latin name is homo sapiens, translated, ‘wise man’ – I fear some do not live up to that name.

We are all in this together, so lets pull together, wearing some form of face covering is not that difficult, and abiding by the rules is only a temporary inconvenience, it could save hundreds, if not thousands of lives. It’s not just the lives that are lost to Covid that we need to count, but the hundreds of other lives that could have been saved by our great NHS, if they weren’t trying to save the lives of those suffering with the severe symptoms of Covid. I appreciate there is a vaccine on the horizon but as yet we do not know how effective it will be in the ‘real world’ so in the meantime lets beat this virus and stick by the rules, the sooner we do that the sooner we’ll get back to some form of normality. Partying to celebrate the end of a lockdown is just insanity.
