SUPPORT has poured in for a popular Aberystwyth publican after a video emerged over the weekend appearing to show him being attacked by a Welsh international rugby player Gareth Davies.

Fred Rennie, owner of Downies Vaults, on Eastgate Street, can be seen in the video, which was filmed last August and published on The Sun’s website on Friday evening, being chased around parked cars while Wales scrum-half Davies, from Llandysul, waves a shoe in his face.

Support for Mr Rennie poured in on social media over the weekend, with #Justice4Fred attached to posts on Facebook in a show of solidarity for the popular businessman.

Davies’ friend, who was filming the fracas, can be heard shouting “you can’t hit a girl on the floor”, to which Mr Rennie responds “I didn’t hit her, I pushed her away”.

A female friend of Davies, who was sitting on the floor, can be heard screaming “Gareth, no, he didn’t hit me on the floor”, and “you will lose your job over this”.

Davies then appears to launch a forceful swing of the shoe at Mr Rennie, although it is unclear whether the blow connected, and, after both men fall to the floor, Davies quickly springs to his feet and stands over Mr Rennie, again threatening to hit him with the shoe.

At this point, another man, understood to be a doorman at Downies, intervenes to defend the Mr Rennie by pushing Davies away, but he too is flung to the floor by the 5ft 10ins 14st Scarlets number 9.

After getting to his feet, the doorman is again thrown to the floor by Davies as the video comes to an end.

Police have confirmed they are now reviewing the incident following publication of the video.
