ABERYSTWYTH Surf Life Saving Club recently held an awards night at Brynamlwg Club and celebrated its most successful year in a very long time.
After club captain, Tomi Turner and head coach, Chris Ashman, trained 17 candidates to pass their beach lifeguard qualifications over last winter and spring, some went on to work as lifeguards on Ceredigion’s beaches for the RNLI.
And in July, Tomi was selected as team manager for the Welsh Surf Life Saving Junior Team, which competed in the Atlantic Games in Orio, the Basque Country, against teams from Asturias, Aquitaine, Brittany, the Canaries, Cantabria, Castille et Leon, Cuba, Scotland, Devon, Ireland, Galicia, The Basque Country, Pays de la Loire and Portugal. Wales took the trophy as winners in the Surf Life Saving discipline, finishing fifth overall.
During the evening, club Chairman Andy Davies presented Captain Tomi Turner with a picture by Lizzy Spikes of Aberystwyth North Bay in appreciation for Tomi’s long service in developing the club.
Mr Davies said afterwards: “The equipment for this sport is expensive — one rescue board costing about £1,200 — and with the growth of the club we are always looking for ways of raising funds to buy new kit.
“The club was very grateful, therefore, to Souled Out Promotions for a donation of £500 raised during a benefit night at the football club."
