The ’hateful, racist’ symbols graffitied onto the iconic Cofiwch Dryweryn wall have been removed, a matter of hours after they came to light.

Ceredigion MS Elin Jones took this photograph of volunteers cleaning up the memorial and welcomed the swift restoration of the wall and removal of the "hateful, racist symbols".

"Cofiwch Dryweryn yn goroesi! Diolch bawb," she added, on a social media post.

And police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.

In the latest attack on the Cofiwch Dryweryn - Remember Tryweryn graffiti mural on the A487 above Llanrhystud, a swastika and another sign were daubed on the monument.

It is the latest in a series of attacks on the monument which marks the flooding of the Tryweryn Valley in the 1960s to create the Llyn Celyn reservoir.

Back in April 2019 Dyfed-Powys Police revealed they were treating an apparent attempt to knock the wall down as a hate crime, but the monument has been repeatedly targeted since then.

Aberystwyth police confirmed they are investigating an offence of criminal damage to the memorial, which was reported at 11.30am on Tuesday, 30 June.

Officers have attended the scene and enquiries are continuing, they said.

Anyone with information that could help officers with their investigation is asked to report it to Dyfed-Powys Police, either online at: http://bit.ly/DPPReportOnline, by email at [email protected], or by calling 101.
