SYRIAN refugees are “settling in well” in “very welcoming” Aberystwyth after arriving last week in time for Christmas, authorities have said.

The 12 refugees, including three families, moved into their new homes on Thursday and Friday to start a new life away from the violent conflicts in their home country.

The dozen will begin English lessons next week, while the refugee children will begin school after Christmas.

Council leader, Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn, chair of the Refugee Task and Finish Group, said: “The refugees have arrived safely in Aberystwyth and are settling well in their new home town.

“Aberystwyth residents have been very welcoming, which I’m sure will be of great comfort to the refugees as they begin to integrate in the community. On behalf of the group, I would like to thank them for showing such compassion and generosity.

“Also, I would like to thank all of the partners, who continue to cooperate so well in our efforts to support these people to the best of our ability.”
