Madam,
During the concert in the Neuadd Pendre, Tywyn, Howard Beaumont delighted us with his skill, versatility and ready wit.
We enjoyed music played on the Wurlitzer organ ranging from marches and ballads, to rock ‘n roll and popular Welsh hymns, when we were encouraged to sing, and to dance when he played the tango.
We tapped our feet to jazz and funky tunes played on the Hammond organ, with David Lowe joining in the fun on the Wurlitzer for Sweet Georgia Brown.
We were treated to excerpts from five wellknown piano pieces played on the Bluthner piano and at one point Howard even burst into song.
This was a wonderful concert showcasing the organist and the instruments at their very best.
The 1937 Tywyn Wurlitzer, originally at the Granada Theatre Woolwich, was purchased and lovingly restored by John Smallwood.
For over 20 years audiences drawn from local residents and tourists, who often arrange their holidays to coincide with the concerts, have enjoyed listening to this Wurlitzer being played by award-winning international organists, invited by John, who each have their own individual style and repertoire.
A Wurlitzer organ produces the sounds of a full orchestra, plus - uniquely to the Tywyn organ - the unmistakable sounds of a steam railway because of the association with the Talyllyn Railway by many in the audience.
Howard Beaumont cleverly combined the xylophone and tibia to replicate the sounds of a ukulele when he played two of George Formby’s greatest hits.
The next concert will be held at 7.30pm in the Neuadd Pendre, Tywyn on Thursday, 8 August when the popular organist and organ restorer Cameron Lloyd will play for us and there are another five concerts for us to enjoy before Christmas.
So please join us, as everyone will be made welcome and given the opportunity to see the workings of this splendid organ.
Yours etc, Isabel Mary Roe, Tywyn.
