A TYWYN grandmother has spoken of her pride after her grandson was selected to play for Wales.

Ryan Griffiths, 13, who is the son of former Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn pupil Gerwyn Griffiths, has been selected to represent Wales at under-13s level.

The Wiltshire-based striker has seen his football career blossom in 2019 after impressing at trials with Yeovil Town FC, signing for their academy.

Ryan will join the Wales squad later this month for his first training camp in Newport, with further camps in April, July and August.

For Ryan, who joined the under-13s after a prolific trial, it adds to a whirlwind start to 2019.

Snapped up from Wiltshire Regional Talent Centre in January, the teen will now have the chance to represent his country.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “I’m grateful I’ve been chosen for it and I can’t wait.

“I’ve been following Wales with my dad since the age of four and was even at the Euro 2016 quarter-final against Belgium, so to pull on the same shirt will be amazing.”

Under-13s coach at Yeovil Town, Mark Challen said: “Ryan’s work rate and humility means he is always hungry to learn and improve and he’s been an excellent addition.

“We all are very excited about his potential moving forward and are proud of his recent achievements at international level.”
