A Ceredigion building will be the envy of all, thanks to the installation of a wall sculpture by Aberystwyth artist Ted Harrison.
The artwork, which is called From Persecution to Celebration, has taken pride of place in Tregaron, on the wall of the old school building which now houses the museum and Red Kite Centre.
Speaking to Maes, Ted said: “After over two years in the planning, with Covid delays and more, at last my wall sculpture for Tregaron is up.”
It is made from cut silhouettes in three contrasting reflective metallic finishes.
“It firstly shows the hovering dove,” said Ted.
“As the story goes, the dove appeared alongside St David, Wales’ patron saint, as he preached.
“The Red Dragon of Wales can also be seen, picked out in the copper colour.”
He added: “Together on the end wall of this old school, the survival and revival of Welsh culture and language is celebrated. It was in schools like this, back in the days of the ‘Welsh Not’, that children were punished for speaking their native tongue in class as an official attempt to suppress the Welsh language. The old school has a replica classroom with a ‘Welsh Not’ on display.”
Today the old school building has a new life as a heritage museum and home to the Red Kite Centre which tells the story of how these beautiful birds were brought back from the edge of extinction in Wales.
“The artwork as a whole shows gathering and swooping kites as observed at a feeding station,” Ted added.
“While I initiated the artwork - the blank wall just invited a work of art - it was funded by the Responsa Foundation which supports art drawing attention to current and historic instances of human intolerance.”
