A TYWYN man intends to climb Cader Idris three times in a single day years after he almost lost his leg in an horrific road accident.

Matthew Wilkes, 49, is planning the arduous trek, which will see him climb nearly 10,000 foot collectively, to raise money for Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team.

In his 20s, Matthew was involved in a severe road accident in which he nearly lost his left leg.

Admitting there are still days where he “can’t even walk”, Matthew told the Cambrian News: “After two years on crutches, not knowing if I would walk unaided again and many more training and exercising I eventually found myself able to climb mountains again.

“I consider myself extremely lucky not only to be alive but still have two legs.

“I still walk with a pronounced limp and my ankle’s a bit of a funny shape – I’m not complaining though.

“I’m taking on this walk to give something back, to raise money for a noble cause.

“I spent a lot of my time in the mountains after I was bitten by the climbing bug about seven or eight years ago so this seemed a fitting way to fund-raise.”
