Without question one of the great challenges facing society is the reduction of harmful atmospheric pollution, especially in areas of high concentration such as large towns and busy cities.

Therefore it was very pleasing to read the excellent letter from Gareth Kelly (Letters, 11 January) supporting tidal power. It is appalling that billions have been wasted on limited wind farms and solar parks. This vast expenditure should have been spent on the pursuance of reliable and clean tidal power.

Tidal power surely needs everyone’s support. But it was disappointing and sad that in a separate letter from John Gee, the irony of felling trees for wind farms appears not to have dawned on him. Perhaps he will be kind enough to share the ‘facts’ with readers of where the electricity will come from on, for example, an icy and windless night in January.

I hope John Gee will acknowledge that large-scale wind generation is totally wind dependent, which obviously results in unpredictable and limited electrical energy output – a scenario that puts us all in peril regarding security of supply.
