Madam,
In reply to the comments made about the suggested additional funding required for Harlech swimming pool from local council taxpayers.
Harlech & Ardudwy, Hamdden Leisure provide use of tennis courts, pool and rock climbing for all ages at comparable prices to those charged by Gwynedd Council.
All facilities in Gwynedd, including highways, policing, tourist offices and public toilets have to justify funds from council taxpayers in order to keep our local services at an acceptable level for residents and visitors.
Are there any other feasible methods by which to draw in funds for services open to all and from which not just the ‘select few’ can benefit?
As a new member of Harlech Leisure my recent visits have witnessed visitors and their families, when the weather prevents the usual forays on the beach, coming in droves which can only have a knock-on financial boost for the local area.
I have seen at first-hand the tireless efforts of the dedicated staff and volunteers to maintain a friendly and welcoming atmosphere in the café and pool.
To those people and you know who you are, I say “Wear your Harlech red shirts with pride”.
At the current Olympics, we have admired the young Adam Peaty of Team GB promoting his sport, encouraging the young generation to “get involved/get inspired”.
Swimming as in all sports can benefit mental and physical health both for young and old alike. How much safer for youngsters to learn swimming and use kayaks in the pool rather than take risks by venturing beyond the shore line of our wonderful beaches. Coastal waters can be treacherous as has been witnessed by recent events.
If funds allow, there may be consideration for future expansion by Harlech Leisure into trampoline events, freestyle jumping – again for young and old alike.
So come on residents in Gwynedd, give it all you’ve got. Come and see for yourselves and don’t forget the great adage, “if you don’t use it, you lose it”.
Yours etc,
Marilyn Storer, Bontddu.
