FORECASTERS are warning of the potential for “torrential” rain and even a risk of hail in parts of Ceredigion today.

Following a run of more than a week of fine weather for the county, the Met Office has issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning of rain for Ceredigion today (Monday), warning residents to be aware of the potential for 40mm of rain in just a few hours.

Issued at 10am today and valid until 9pm, the Met Office warning states: “Heavy, thundery showers are expected to break out this afternoon over central and western parts of Northern Ireland and western parts of Wales.

“Whilst many will miss the worst, rain will be locally torrential, with the risk of hail. Please be aware of the risk of localised flooding.”

The chief forecaster’s assessment adds: “Warm, moist, unstable air from the continent will allow thunderstorms to develop as temperatures rise today, bringing the potential for 25mm of rain in an hour, and the risk of more than 40mm in a few hours.”
