Trees on a Machynlleth town centre street are facing the chainsaw after trunk road officials issued a notice demanding that “urgent work” be carried out on them.
Machynlleth Town Council has received a notice from the Trunk Road Agency saying that a survey of trees on Maengwyn Street showed work needed to be done to make them safe.
Councillors said they felt the trees were an important part of Maengwyn Street.
And they have asked clerk Jim Griffiths to meet with Trunk Road Agency representatives to find out what work needs to be done.
The town council received criticism after a survey of trees at the Plas showed that significant work was needed, specifically on a prominent tree on the Plas lawn.
Cllr Simon Morpeth said it was important the council could explain why work was needed on the trees by checking the problems identified by the Trunk Road Agency’s survey.
He said: “If we’re going to start felling trees in Maengwyn Street the public are going to want to know we’ve done the due diligence.
“We don’t want to look like the baddie by just doing what the Trunk Road Agency is saying.”
