Madam,
Your article concerning the “sea of rubbish” in New Quay was most appropriate and the comments contained therein correct.
Following its publication I have walked several times around the town and have made a number of observations which fully substantiate the views expressed.
Fly-tipping has occurred in many places, for example, behind the bottle bank in the surgery car park, behind the memorial hall, and near the turning circles at the ends of Marine Terrace and Rock Street. There is litter such as plastic bottles, cans, paper, especially in grassed or overgrown areas and near to the car parks.
Ceredigion County Council is fully aware of the rubbish problem and, even though the harbour area has many litter bins provided, they are filled quickly especially in the summer months.
To alleviate the problem of rubbish from holiday homes it has been suggested that collections are made on Mondays, as is the case in a part of New Quay, not Fridays, but this has been ignored by the council.
While many residents have attempted voluntarily to keep the place tidy what is needed is a council-funded street cleaner similar to the one in Aberaeron, but probably during the summer months only.
Furthermore, weeds are growing in the gutters along many of the terraces and side roads and also in many of the old walls of the town. The town appears to be unkempt, even though some residents make efforts to keep some areas weed-free. There are few flowers provided by the council. The damaged surface to the lane near the surgery has not been addressed for several years.
The comment that New Quay is the poor relation to Aberaeron is certainly correct.
No doubt Ceredigion County Council will plead lack of financial resources, even though council tax has risen, once again, by about five per cent.
It was initially stated that the extra 25 per cent on the council tax levied on second-home owners would be used at the place of origin but it has been rumoured recently that this is not the case and that the extra revenue would go into “central funds”.
Money raised in New Quay should be spent on making the place clean, tidy and attractive.
What have our councils, both county and town, done in regard to the above problems? Our representatives need to do better.
Yours etc,
Alwyn Davies, New Quay.
