CARDIGAN is poised to temporarily change its name to ‘Jumper’ next December – as part of the Save The Children Xmas Jumper Day campaign.
Town mayor Cllr Clive Davies told fellow councillors that people were being encouraged to wear Christmas jumpers on Friday, 16 December, to raise money for the children’s charity.
And as part of the campaign, organisers had suggested Cardigan could change its name to ‘Jumper’ for the day!
In an e-mail to the town council they said: “We would like to release a spoof story saying Cardigan has changed its name to Jumper – we’ve had a good response from your tourist board.”
“Apart from raising money for a worthy cause this would certainly put us on the map,” Cllr Davies told colleagues. “We would be guaranteed unique attention.”
Cllr Mark Cole was also enthusiastic. “It’s a very good charity,” he said. “It’s fun and silly and personally I have no problems with it.”
Cllr Melfydd George felt it was a “silly” idea.
“It’s meant to be, Melfydd,” replied Cllr Davies, “but it’s just for the one day and for a good cause.”
