A TOWN will come together this weekend to remember two youngsters.

This Sunday (27 May) the Marian Mawr playing fields in Dolgellau will be flooded with hundreds of well-wishers attending the 10th annual David Smithies Fun Day.

A much-anticipated event in the town every year, David’s family hope this will be the “biggest ever” and hope to raise around £8,000 at the event, boosting their collective fund-raising pot to nearly £90,000.

David Smithies, a popular sportsperson in Dolgellau, lost his life in 2006 aged just 17 and money is raised every year for a different charity to commemorate his life.

This year the Smithies family are raising money for Ty Gobaith in honour of another young Dolgellau resident who passed away in tragic circumstances.

Deian Savage was just five years old when he passed away in 2016 after being born with a congenital condition which affected his growth and also caused epilepsy and affected his immune system.

Greg Smithies, David’s brother, said: “The reason we are supporting Ty Gobaith is because of the fantastic work they carry out with young children.

“They provide respite and end-of-life care at the hospices and within the family home, providing support and care for the young children and also for the families.

“We have seen their work at first-hand after friends of our family were indebted for their support.

“Deian Savage touched many people’s heart, including mine, with his beautiful smile and his endearing nature towards people, and I like many enjoyed being in his company.

“The support Deian and his family received from Ty Gobaith was invaluable, and provided much-needed support.”
