Madam,

Will the Conservative Party ever learn from history? They are unbelievably echoing similar mistakes the Tory Party made back in 1961 when the Conservative Government’s transport secretary, Ernest Marples, hired Dr Beeching to decimate the railways.

Thankfully government has recognised what a monumental error it made back then in closing so many lines. Not surprisingly, government is now seeing the wisdom in opening up new railway lines.

But what a myopic, restricted and idiotic scheme the HS2 project is - wasting billions of pounds, when the money should be spent across the whole of the rail network so everyone benefits.

Apart from the outrageous HS2 project, the government is yet again making a colossal mistake, with various energy secretaries mirroring historical errors with their haste in closing down fossil-fuelled power stations, this folly being compounded by encouraging and wasting billions on limited and costly large-scale wind and solar farms.

Yours etc,

Dave Haskell, Address supplied.
