TREGARON WI was delighted to welcome members of the community and other WIs to its January meeting, when Dr Angie Polkey spoke about her visit to Ladakh. The title of her talk was ‘Ancient futures; learning from Ladakh’. Dr Polkey, formerly manager of Denmark Farm, near Lampeter, is an educator and conservationist with a particular interest in permaculture. She visited Ladakh in northern India which is bordered by Pakistan and China and stayed and worked with local families. Its people mainly live by subsistence farming and she wanted to learn about their way of life and its sustainability. She was an inspirational speaker and showed us some wonderful photos of the area and its people. At the end of the meeting a vote of thanks was given by Gay Evans and the raffle, donated by Julien Dixon was won by Delyth Jones. The competition, for an item with an Indian influence, was won by Catherine Evans whose colourful blanket was made of yak hair. The next meeting, ‘Creative crochet’, will be held in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, 10 February, at 7.30pm. Jacqueline Jeynes of Pencoed Textiles will be showing members how to crochet. It will be a ‘hands on’ meeting and we will be provided with all that we need to ‘have a go’! Every-one to join.
