The family of a well-known local woman have paid tribute to “one of Aberystwyth’s greatest”, after she sadly died of cancer.
“Beloved” Betty Shakespeare, 90, died at her home in Aberystwyth, on 27 March, with her daughters Julie and Susan by her side, after a battle with cancer.
Bethan Davies, Betty’s grandson’s wife, said on behalf of the family: “The hole she leaves behind in our family is huge and I can say I’m so grateful to be part of her family and to have loved and known her.
“Her daughters, grandchildren and our collective great-grandchildren will miss her ability to always make us laugh and to always make us feel loved and welcome within her home.
“It always amazed me that Betty seemed to know everyone.
“She had worked in the Co-op, the White Horse, Neuadd Pantycelyn Hall, Bronglais Hospital and the RNLI Lifeboat Station.
“She knew the shoppers, the doctors, the nurses and other workers at the hospital, the patients and their families – I think she knew most of you.
“She is what Aberystwyth is all about – community, kindness, friendship and family.”
Betty’s funeral was held on 7 April, and Betty passed through Aberystwyth and up Penglais Hill to allow the community to pay their respects in a Covid-19 safe way. Starbucks and many other shops, “who thought the world of Betty”, closed their doors to say goodbye to Betty.
“Our family want to thank so many of you for coming to say goodbye to Betty and lining the pavements of Great Darkgate Street which meant so much - more than you could know.
“This town will miss you always Betty Bach.”
