Tributes have been paid this week to an icon of Ceredigion music and pioneer of the Welsh music industry who has passed away aged 65 - just weeks after his bandmate brother.

Richard Jones from Cardigan was a singer, composer and producer, best known from his time in Ail Symudiad, a band he formed with his brother, Wyn, in 1978.

The brothers also set up the independent record label Fflach and a recording studio in Cardigan.

Richard died last week, with the news coming just a month after the passing of his younger brother and Ail Symudiad bassist, Wyn.

The brothers were recognised for their contribution to the Welsh music industry in 2017 when they were both accepted in the Gorsedd at the National Eisteddfod in Anglesey.

Richard’s family posted an emotional tribute on the band’s Twitter page this week.

They wrote: “Y Symudiad Olaf. Our hearts are forever broken.

“Life is so unfair.”

“Thank you Richard/Dad for everything – our world was his world,” they said.

“Thanks to everyone for the messages - Ann, Dafydd and Osian.”

Ail Symudiad became a major influence in the Welsh language music scene since forming.

From early influences drawn from The Clash and The Buzzcocks, the brothers’ band and later their studio and record label in Cardigan helped nurture and influence several generations of Welsh musical talent.
