The family of a man who died after his car caught fire have paid tribute to him.

Michael Green, 70, died on 21 June last year.

His body was discovered in his car near the B4406 between Cwm Penmachno and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

An inquest into the death heard that the car fire in which Mr Green died was probably cause by a cigarette.

The coroner recorded a verdict of misadventure.

Following the conclusion of the inquest, Mr Green’s family paid tribute to him, saying: “Meic was a loyal and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother who cared very much for his family and, whatever happened, that will be our memories of him.

“Brought up in Llanuwchllyn and Pentrefoelas and then settling down in Blaenau Ffestiniog, he grabbed the chance later on to see the world by working and travelling to many countries. Recently, he would travel regularly back and forth to Germany as a result of his work as a courier.

“He was a modest character and he didn’t like a fuss and he wouldn’t make a fuss of any kind.

“We are very grateful for the support that we received from the police and liaison officers in our grievous loss and also to friends, neighbours and relations for the love and care shown to us in our bereavement.”

Detective chief inspector Sion Williams said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Green following his tragic death and we recognise the profound impact this has had on those who knew him.

“We launched a multi-agency investigation that involved a number of specialist resources with an absolute focus on trying to establish what caused this tragic event.

“I am entirely satisfied that this was an incident solely involving Mr Green’s vehicle when he was out for one of his usual afternoon drives – something that he enjoyed and clearly had a passion for.

“Nevertheless and despite our painstaking and meticulous efforts, we have sadly been unable to isolate the elementary factor with the vehicle that instigated the fatal chain of events.”

Mr Green’s family have asked for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time.
