Tributes have been paid to an Aberystwyth Town footballing legend who served the club and the town’s lifeboat station for more than half a century.
Bryan Pugh Jones, a former Aberystwyth Town captain and an Honorary Life Governor of the RNLI, passed away last weekend aged 78.
Flags at Aberystwyth Town’s Park Avenue ground and at Aberystwyth lifeboat station were lowered to half mast in tribute.
Aberystwyth Lifeboat Station said: “Bryan served the station with distinction for 57 years as part of the crew, tractor driver, station mechanic and deputy launching authority.
“He will be missed and fondly remembered by the crew past and present and our condolences go to his family and friends at this sad time.”
Aberystwyth Town Football Club, where Bryan filled several roles during a 50 year association, said it is “devastated” by his death, describing him as a “long-time stalwart and club legend.”
“Bryan devoted his life to the Black and Greens and Aberystwyth RNLI,” a club spokesperson said.
“He was a truly unique and modest individual who was a hard worker for his community in ways not many could match. He was a source of wisdom, advice and countless stories from his playing days, making his acquaintance and unmistakable wit a true pleasure to all he encountered. At this sad time the thoughts and condolences of everyone at Aberystwyth Town Football Club are extended to Bryan’s family and friends.”
Flags were flown at half-mast during the club’s first team match with TNS on Bank Holiday Monday, while a minute’s silence will be held at a later date, the club said.
