TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Llandysul bank manager who has died at the age of 88.

Dewi James, described as “a larger than life character” took over the post of manager at the Midland Bank in 1965 and proceeded to hold it for the next 30 years.

Cefneithin-born Mr James, who died on 20 November, was the brother of the celebrated rugby coach Carwyn James, the man behind the British Lions’ triumphant tour of New Zealand in 1971 and Llanelli’s famous win over the All Blacks the following year.

“Dewi didn’t like being introduced as Carwyn’s brother but he was very supportive,” long-time friend John Lewis, of Gomer Press, told the Cambrian News.

“Dewi was passionate about the chapel, Plaid Cymru and the Welsh language and rugby, particularly Llanelli.

“We were both there on the day the Scarlets defeated the All Blacks."
