Tributes have been paid to a well-known Aberystwyth sporting figure who has died aged 90.
Wynn Hughes, who played multiple sports for town teams and taught thousands of youngsters as a PE teacher, passed away on 15 January at home in Llanbadarn.
Mr Hughes was an Aberystwyth Town Football Club stalwart, turning out for the Black and Greens for 17 seasons between 1946 and 1962, making 250 appearances and scoring 44 goals.
He was known as an all-action wing-half, or full-back; a local boy who was educated at Ardwyn Grammar School and moved on to study at Loughborough University, whom he also represented.
After university, Wynn returned to Aberystwyth and became head of physical education at Ardwyn School.
He later joined the staff of University College Wales Aberystwyth as a PE lecturer in teacher training and went on to become director of that department and an honorary life vice president of Aberystwyth Town Football Club.
Aberystwyth Town FC said the club “sends its sincere condolences to Wynn’s family and friends at this difficult time”.
Aberystwyth Golf Club, where Wynn was an honorary member, said it extends its “deepest sympathy to his wife Mair and family” after the “sad loss of a lifetime supporter of the club”.
