AN AMBULANCE driver from Pwllheli who crashed into a second ambulance had suffered a heart attack at the wheel moments before the collision occurred.

A post-mortem examination showed John Clift, 54, (pictured) suffered the heart attack prior to the collision on the A499 near Pwllheli on 29 April.

Mr Clift, who had served 12 years with the Welsh Ambulance Service, died at the scene of natural causes.

The office of North West Wales coroner, Dewi Pritchard Jones, said there would not be an inquest into the death.

The incident between an emergency ambulance and a patient care service ambulance happened on the A499, north of Y Ffôr.

Mr Clift, who leaves behind his partner, stepchildren and granddaughter, was driving the service ambulance at the time of the incident transporting a non-time critical patient and was proceeding under normal road conditions, i.e. no lights or sirens.

The Welsh Ambulance Service is carrying out its own investigation into the tragedy.

He was renowned as a “well known and well liked” man who will be “greatly missed by everyone.”

The popular driver had also served as a member of the Pwllheli Fire and Rescue service for 26 years.
