TRIBUTES have flooded in for a heroic Second World War fighter pilot who has died aged 97.

The great and good have remembered Wing Commander John Wynne, of Glyn Artro, Llanbedr, who died on 19 November.

Mr Wynne, who has been described as “a wonderful man”, survived his 68-year-old son Ben Wynne by just 11 days after he was tragically killed in an accident involving a tree on the family farm.

The first to pay tribute was Air Chief Marshal, Sir Stephen Hillier, Chief of the Air Staff and head of the RAF.

“Wing Commander John Wynne DFC was a gentleman and a character,” he told the Cambrian News.

“It was great to see John being central to some of the RAF100 events in Wales this year.

“He was part of the extraordinary cadre of heroic aircrew to whom we owe a great debt, our freedom was fought for and won by them, their bravery and sacrifice should never be forgotten – lest we forget.”
