THREE men are hoping to raise a “significant amount of money” for charity with a 150-mile run starting at Plynlimon, near Aberystwyth.

Gerry Stentiford, Julian Sarsby and Charlie Newington-Bridges from Monmouthshire will take on the run down the length of the Wye from the source to the mouth over six days.

The race starts in Plynlimon, near Aberystwyth, on 27 May, and will run through Rhayader, Builth Wells, Hay, Ross and Monmouth ending in Chepstow on 2 June.

The trio have based the event on the famous endurance race, Marathon Des Sables, and have called it the Marathon Des Salmon.

The 150-mile run will be broken down into four marathons and one double marathon, with the runners carrying all their food and equipment.

The fundraising and sponsorship for the event will be split between the Wye and Usk Foundation and Ty Hafan children’s hospice.

Gerry said: “The main aims of the race are to draw attention to the beautiful River Wye and the challenges the river and its surrounding habitat face, and to raise money for two local charities with truly great causes.”

The trio have not ruled out making the race an annual event if it goes well.

“It is questionable whether we would be insane enough to do it again, but we’d like to make this an event with legs,” Gerry said. “The aim is for others to run it.”
