This year’s Aberystwyth charity 10k race will be dedicated to one of the event’s founders, long-serving Aberystwyth councillor and former mayor Carl Williams, after he passed away last week.
Mr Williams, 81, who served on both Aberystwyth Town Council and Ceredigion County Council and was Aberystwyth mayor in 1992/93, died on Wednesday, 13 November.
He was one of the key figures in setting up the annual 10k race, whose main sponsor is the Cambrian News, and organisers have said this year’s event will be dedicated to Mr Williams, to pay tribute to him.
Mr Williams was a councillor on the old Dyfed District Council and was on Ceredigion council from its formation in 1996 until 2012, representing the Aberystwyth North Ward. He also sat as a Cabinet member responsible for education.
Llandysul county councillor Keith Evans, who was Ceredigion council leader when Mr Williams was on the council’s Cabinet, said: “It has been my privilege to have known and worked alongside Carl over many decades serving together on the former district council and I then had the joy of working alongside him on the Cabinet of the new unitary authority of Ceredigion. A true gent, conscientious, diligent and an excellent and true team player.
“He was a strong advocate of democracy and served his Aberystwyth electorate and the wider community of Ceredigion with vigour.”
Mr Williams leaves two daughters, Kay and Lizzie, and a sister, Olga.
A public funeral service will be held at Aberystwyth Crematorium on Tuesday, 26 November, at 2pm.
No flowers but donations in memory of Carl will be gratefully accepted towards Meurig Ward, Bronglais Hospital and/or Plas Cwmcynfelin Care Home c/o Selwyn Evans, D J Evans Funeral Directors, Swyddfa’r Ysgubor, Alexandra Road, Aberystwyth SY23 1LN. Tel 01970 615328.
