PEDESTRIANS and cyclists can now safely navigate their way in and out of Porthmadog following the completion of a new bypass.

A new path which is suitable for walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users has been created near the Ty Moelwyn site, Porthmadog in order to connect two existing paths in the area.

The new 170m long path creates a new link between the path that runs alongside the Cob, opened in 2002, and the path around Cob Crwn. The main purpose of the new path is to give people the choice of avoiding the busy area near Britannia Bridge, and to add to the walking and cycling opportunities in the Porthmadog area.

There have been numerous incidents and injuries, particularly involving cyclists, on the busy road off the Cob so the news will be welcomed by all road users in the area.

With the co-operation of the landowners, the Gwynedd Council Transport and Countryside Service was able to build the path with a grant of £70,000 through the Welsh Government’s Green Infrastructure fund.

The Green Infrastructure Capital Grant provides funding for various projects, including work to improve the quality of the urban environment and access to the environment for health and the economy.

Cllr Dafydd Meurig, deputy leader of Gwynedd Council and Cabinet member for the environment, said: “This new path is part of the local active travel network in Gwynedd which benefits local residents and visitors to the area. Not only does it provide the option for people to avoid the busy area around Britannia Bridge, but it also enhances the opportunities for people to enjoy the environment in the Porthmadog area."
