Uncertainty and a lack of guidance for organisers over coronavirus has led to the second cancellation of both Capel Bangor and District Show and Aberaeron Carnival.

The Capel Bangor and District Show, which was first held in 1970 and has been held on the first Saturday of August ever since 1971, is a staple of the county’s show season.

Aberaeron Carnival usually takes place on August Bank Holiday Monday but was cancelled last year - and now this - due to Covid-19 concerns.

Capel Bangor and District Show committee had hoped to finally celebrate the event’s 50th anniversary in style later this year after last year’s show was also cancelled in the wake of the pandemic.

However, the celebrations will have to wait again until 2022, with organisers pledging to hold the show next August instead.

The event, which was due to be held on 7 August, was cancelled last week for the second year, with organisers saying the situation was “unfortunate”.

A statement from show organisers said: “Due to the current situation regarding Covid-19, and with no guidance for show organisers being released until June, unfortunately the Capel Bangor Show committee have made the decision to cancel this year’s show.

“We were looking forward to organising a very special day to celebrate 50 years, this will now be put on hold for another year until next year’s show.”

Established at a public meeting in 1969, the long-running show was last held in August 2019.

The show’s committee also confirmed that next year’s event is now set to be held on Saturday, 6 August.

Aberaeron Carnival committee said it would be too “difficult” to hold the event because of Covid, but also with regard to “safe zone configurations” within the town.

Announcing the cancellation on Facebook, Cllr Rhodri Jones, deputy mayor for Aberaeron and secretary of Aberaeron Town Improvements Committee said: “Following a meeting of the Aberaeron Town Improvements Committee last night (22 April), after much consideration, the committee has decided to cancel Aberaeron Carnival 2021.

“Due to the size and nature of the carnival, it would be difficult to stage safely not only as a ‘Covid safe’ event but also due to the various town centre changes in place with regards to the ‘safe zone’ configurations. We very much look forward to welcoming you back to next year’s Aberaeron 2022 Carnival.”

Cllr Jones said the community had been supportive of the decision, and Aberaeron county councillor Elizabeth Evans said it was “the only decision that could have been made”.

“It’s the sensible thing for them to do because Aberaeron needs to remain safe and with the amount of tourists we’re expecting to have this summer, the town improvements committee have made the right decision. The carnival attracts thousands of people, and it has such a good reputation, but Aberaeron is going to be incredibly busy anyway.”
