CONCERNS of future generation farmers must be heeded, Dwyfor Meirionnydd’s MP has said.

Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts spent time with upland farmers in Meirionnydd to listen to their concerns about the uncertainty facing the agricultural industry in Wales as Brexit negotiations reach an impasse.

Mrs Saville Roberts was hosted by three generations of the Jones family at Defaidty farm, Cwmtirmynach, near Bala, and was joined by Plaid Cymru AM for north Wales, Llyr Huws Gruffydd.

Mrs Saville Roberts said: “It was a pleasure to visit Defaidty farm in Cwmtirmynach and meet three generations of the Jones family, who have an infectious passion for the future of upland farming, at a time of real concern for many farmers across the constituency with further uncertainty over Brexit, future funding and agricultural policies in general.

“The discussion focused on the current state of the agricultural industry in Wales and the future of Welsh Government funding for agriculture, especially schemes such as Glastir and the low prices for lamb from upland farms.

“I also provided an update on Brexit as negotiations reach an impasse.”

She added: “It is vital that the voices of young upland farmers are heard loud and clear as our agriculture industry faces one of the most challenging, uncertain periods in modern times.

“The opportunity to talk to upland farmers who are really passionate about the future of agriculture and their Welsh-speaking communities was invaluable and I was encouraged by their enthusiasm for the industry.

“I would like to thank FUW Meirionnydd for facilitating this meeting and for the work they do to bring our farming communities and elected representatives together at a time of such uncertainty for one our most key industries.”
