Machynlleth is set to host the 2022 Urdd National Eisteddfod as organisers confirm they are in talks to site the Maes near the Plas.

Urdd Gobaith Cymru announced that the 2022 event would be held in Montgomeryshire and a public meeting at Glantwymyn heard that land between Y Plas and Machynlleth Leisure Centre has been identified as a possible location for the Maes.

The announcement has been welcomed by Machynlleth councillor Michael Williams who said that welcoming the prestigious event would be a huge boost to Machynlleth and the surrounding area – especially as it will be the Urdd’s centenary event.

The 2022 eisteddfod will be held between 30 May and 4 June and it is estimated that around 90,000 visitors will attend over that period.

It would be the first time the Urdd eisteddfod has been held in Montgomeryshire for 34 years.

Cllr Williams said that would be a huge boost to the town’s economy and said he was thrilled that Machynlleth could host the Urdd’s centenary event.

He said: “It’s fantastic for the town, the Dyfi Valley and probably further afield.

“It’ll be a huge benefit and boost to the area.”

Cllr Williams added: “I’m delighted the Urdd is considering Machynlleth for its centenary in 2022.

“Over six days it is estimated that there will be 90,000 visitors.”

Morys Gruffyd, Eisteddfod yr Urdd organiser, said: “2022 is an important year for the Urdd as we celebrate the organisation’s centenary and it is a great pleasure to confirm that the Urdd Eisteddfod will return to Maldwyn for the first time in 34 years."
