Editor,

In response to an earlier letter from Mr Pidgeon regarding the destruction of a mature beech hedge to accommodate a cycle path and pavement from IBERS to Penrhyncoch. Surely a compromise should be found here.

As Mr Pidgeon rightly points out, there is an existing path running the length of Cae Penrhyn. Why is this not being utilised as part of the new proposed path, leaving the hedge as a buffer from the traffic and also saving some money (it would also make for a more pleasant walk/cycle away from the incessant traffic).

A replanted new hedge will take many years to mature. The local authority keeps on informing us of its environmental policies and part of the remit of IBERS is the environment, so why deliberately kill a perfectly good mature hedge? In fact I would much prefer if the money was being spent for the benefit of all - young and old and not for the very few. As a resident, Penrhyncoch is in dire need of decent street lighting throughout the village. With ever increasing estates being built, surely safety should be a priority these days with the increased traffic. Providing adequate lighting in order for people to be seen far outweighs the number of people and cyclists who may use this pavement!
