A YOUNG girl from Porthmadog is raising money for the Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team.

Nanw-Mai is aiming to complete a five mile trek with her dad, Rogan Chester, who is a member of the team.

The three-year-old said she enjoys raising money for local causes.

She said: “Last year, I completed a three mile walk raising money for my local play school and have already climbed Moel ddu, Moel-y-Gest and Y Cnicht.

“I thoroughly enjoy days out on walks and seeing wildlife, and love going to the team’s base with daddy to see the vehicles.

“One day when I am older I want to follow daddy’s footsteps and be a team member.”

Rogan told the Cambrian News how his daughter regularly asks him about his work and how she decided to start raising money.

He said: “Being her father and a serving team member, she always asks about the work we do, often wondering why I have to leave the house at a drop of a hat, and loves to hear the story after of me going to someone’s aid.

“One day I asked her if she would like to raise money for the team by going on a trek like she did for her school last year and she happily agreed.

“Like most of the other team members’ children she is part of the Aberglaslyn MRT family, it’s something you grow up with.”

Rogan added that a “highlight” for him came “last week”.

“I and a few team members were picked up for a shout on Snowdon by the coastguard helicopter from our base in Porthmadog, and Nanw-Mai was proudly pointing to the sky shouting to her cousins and family ‘My daddy’ as we flew directly over them in the garden.”

Ed Hawkins, who is fundraising officer for the team, said: “Nanw-Mai is one of our youngest supporters and the team are incredibly grateful for her effort to raise money and awareness of our work. Her challenge is very impressive and we wish her well with the trek.

“Fundraising has been particularly difficult over the past year and we rely on supporters like Nanw-Mai so that we can help visitors and the local community.’

So far, Nanw-Mai is over half way to her target of £300. The trek is likely to take place in the middle of September.
