FOOTBALL fans in Ceredigion are preparing for it to kick off between two historic rivals - all in the name of charity.

On Friday at 7.30pm, a fierce yet friendly derby will take place on Aberystwyth Town FC’s new 3G pitch, pitting old foes England and Wales against each other.

The charity fundraising match will feature two squads of amateur footballers, many of whom live and work in Aberystwyth, but with some players travelling from miles away to participate.

The idea is the brainchild of Steve Matthews, a former Aberystwyth University student who moved to the area after finishing his sports degree.

“There’s always been a large pool of amateur footballers in the town, especially when the students are around,” said Steve, who will be playing for England.

“Over the last few months, we’ve enjoyed some decent kickabouts where the standard has been very impressive - it doesn’t matter how talented you are, it really depends on your ability to work in a team.

“Given the mix of nationalities on display, I had the idea of an England vs Wales game, floated the idea to a few of the players and the idea has just snowballed from there.

“It should be a great game and we’ll be raising money for two terrific causes.”

The two teams will be fundraising before the game, hoping to collect as many donations and sponsorships for both the Samaritans as well as local charities.

All pitch fees and kits will be paid for by the players themselves so 100 per cent of all donations will go to worthy causes. Entry to the game is free, with bucket donations taken on the night.
